Rumble for Royalty 2008 Winner
SAMPLE ROLEPLAY: (Taken from XPW's Survival of the Sickest PPV in December)
*The scene opens up with dim lights on a street corner. At first we see nothing, but as a car speeds by a lone figure appears leaning against the street post. As the camera slowly zooms in we see a photo of a soldier and a woman holding an infant in the hands of the figure. He seems disgruntled as he slips the photograph back into his pocket*
My entire life I wished I could see him again. After that photo was taken my father was sent to fight in the Gulf War. I never got to even see him in person besides the recorded videos he made the army send to us. I still keep them in my possession today...It’s all I have left of his.....Through those videos I learned my life lessons.....Respect....Loyalty.....Discipline....Trust.....and most importantly....Intelligence....It’s almost like he knew he wasn’t going to be coming back to see me...I was too young at the time to know what day it was when the marine showed up...But I remember exactly what happened...My mother had just prepared a meal for me and I had just learned how to sit in a regular chair, so as all three year olds act, I felt like a grown up. I even wore my dad’s old uniform from when he last came back on holiday...I was about to try using a fork for the first time when the knock came to the door....I peered over the chair to see what was going on to see a fully clad marine bearing a yellow slip of paper....Next thing I knew my mother collapsed to the ground....I don’t remember much else happening besides my mother trying to keep me calm in explaining why daddy was never coming home.....
*The figure steps into the light to reveal Michael Nelson Matthews as Paulie walks in from the side*
Matthews: Why do I tell you this? It will all become clear later on....I realized that everyone in the industry knows me as a smug, cocky, son of a b*tch…But doesn’t know how that being came to be what he is today....A rising star in the XPW…..Let me take you down memory lane in a little segment I like to call Matthewspiece Theater....Not the best of names, but if I would be more worried about the story than the name.....Especially you Tony...If I was you I’d listen closely....You call me bipolar still....All this playtime leading to this match was nothing compared to the real me.....Now something more important to me and you is on the line this Sunday at Survival of the Sickest...But I will touch up on that later, as I said before....Let the show begin....
*The scene quickly changes to home videos of a child slowly growing up. Soon we see that this child is a young Matthews*
Matthews: Despite my mother remarrying and having more children....I never really had a father...He hated me....I represented everything he hated...I was smarter and more athletic than he ever was and he resented me for it....He did everything in his power to prevent anything from happening...Whenever I tried out for a school sport he bribed the coaches to not let me on the team despite how well I did....This trend continued throughout pretty much most of my life until I was introduced to amateur wrestling....The coach was at first bribed, but it just so happened my future mentor Kurt Angle was in the presence of the try-outs....He paid the wrestling coach double anything my step-father could muster up, so he fell back and watched me as I continued to excel in the ring...I kept trying to tell my mother he was trying to ruin my life, but she was blinded by love....Which sickened me, but I accepted it, because she needed another man in her life, even when I was there....I knew I wasn’t enough and while it let that horrible person into our lives, I knew that regardless of what was to transpire, he made her happy...Which was all I wished to see.....
*Paulie pulls out a folder with the name Margaret Matthews-Stevenson on it. Matthews slowly takes hold of the folder and breathes deeply before finally speaking*
Matthews: Despite my stepfather Will’s wishes, that was his first name and all I would call him, she kept the Matthews surname in honor of her dead husband....William was not pleased, yelling at her, leaving for days at a time.....Sometimes I even saw unexplained welts and bruises across her face...I knew how they got there....I just couldn’t do anything about it....I was weak....A pathetic loser who couldn’t stand up to him....
*Matthews opens the file and they show pictures of a tumor on his mother’s chest in various positions. The notes from the doctors on the side which were unrecognizable*
Matthews: When they found the tumor on her chest....My worst fears came to light.....She had breast cancer.....Will never went to visit her....Only time he did was when he needed to know how much money she received for disability pay from her work....I, on the other hand, went to visit her everyday in between classes and practice....And everyday she smiled and placed her hand on my cheek as she slowly became weaker.....Will didn’t think the doctors could help her, so he did nothing but basically let her slowly wither away into nothing....
*Matthews hands the folder back to Paulie, who in return hands him a trophy*
Matthews: Instead of focusing on my mother, I used my emotions in the ring...That year I went undefeated.....Went on to qualify in the National High School championships....It was my senior year and when I was about to go, the doctors had one final announcement...One week to live.....I didn’t want to go because I didn’t want to be miles away when she finally went on....But when I was finally alone with my mother...Although she could barely speak.....Her eyes nearly sealed due to the cancer spreading to the brain....She told me “Go......don’t worry.....I’ll....be...with you.....” And with that I regretfully stepped onto the bus looking back at the hospital and went on to compete in the nationals....I used my emotion to my advantage and surprised everyone that this small-town boy could do such damage.....That night was all a blur to me, I don’t remember who I faced, how long I was in the ring, or even going to and from the center where it was being held...I just know I had a giant trophy in my hand one week later as I returned to the hospital...
*Matthews sets down the trophy down on the ground as Paulie hands Matthews a small card with a picture of St. Francis of Assisi.*
Matthews: My mother somehow survived...The doctor’s couldn’t explain how she was living...All the tests show that my mother should have died days before I even finished the championship....Will was nowhere to be seen as usual...All the other children sat huddled around their mother...The priest says it is a miracle in the name of God that she survived to see her son once more.....That was a load of shit....And we all knew it...My mother was a strong woman....She wasn’t going to let a disease keep her from seeing her son one last time.....Especially since she couldn’t do so with her husband....The doctors then told us she would leave us within the hour....They gave us each time alone with her...Me being the oldest, I was given the last person to go....I told her about my championship as she lay there motionless and seemingly already dead...All she could do was tilt her head trying to respond....As soon as I muttered the words “I love you…” the doctors and nurses all ran in, as if those words were the poison that would finally kill her...And next I knew....I was all alone...
*Matthews flips the card over. It reads R.I.P. Margaret Matthews-Stevenson. Mother of three. Former widow of John Matthews who bore the son Michael Nelson Matthews. Relit her flames of love meeting William Stevenson(Matthews sighed when this part was reached). Father of William Stevenson Jr. and Christina Stevenson.
God saw you getting tired, and a cure was not to be, so He put his arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away, and although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.*
Matthews: When the event first happened, these words fit so well....But the night after the funeral....Will and I had a fight and next thing I knew I was on the streets....Newspapers caught word and soon my reputation was tarnished....No college accepted me even after my championship....I lived in the YMCA forced to give work-out instructions to pay for my cot in the broom closet...Next thing I knew there was a knock on the door and there stood Kurt Angle....At first I was skeptical...Who wouldn’t be...Coming off of winning a gold medal...Whenever he approached anyone it was a dream moment...When he offered me a home at Foxcatcher....I didn’t believe it...It was like I finally caught a break...I finally found somewhere I belonged.....
*Matthews hands the card back over to Paulie as he hands Matthews an XWA t-shirt. Matthews then pulls the shirt over himself and stares into the camera*
Matthews: I have come under fire by wearing this shirt by my opponent Tony Maverick the entire month...Saying I don’t know the real XWA....And he isn’t lying...But if he thinks that is an insult he is dead wrong...At first I joined because it was my chance to show these men a thing or two...And it worked...I got the response I hoped for and now I have a shot at the XXX title....But this slowly became something personal.....When I found myself taking out Kurt Angle, once again I found myself without anyone to my name...Grant didn’t care about me...Clearly since he clotheslined me for no reason other than being jealous that I was there to help Trixie win....I didn’t get the feeling of family until I teamed with Omen....That week he gave me a little DVD I like to call...The Rise and Fall of the XWA....At that point I realized what Venom brought me into...While you may be right in saying it isn’t the same thing as it once was....In the eyes of its members it is the real deal....And in my eyes...I’m honored to be fighting alongside them....I was hand-picked to fight under their flag....I get the opportunity to call myself as being on the same team as the likes Venom, Kilbane, and Seeker....You....You have the likes of.....Kevin? Gravedigger? Orion? Hemingway? And a huge list of other jobbers...And one of those mentioned jobbers is even in the main event.....Proof that I would’ve gotten NOWHERE if I had stayed with XPW.....And regardless of which team wins this Sunday, I will have a title around my waist, rendering any decisions by Ant if he wishes to remove me…
*Matthews would pull out the picture of his family again*
Matthews: My little sob story isn’t meant to win anyone over...I haven’t even gotten into the bulk of my past yet...I lost everything I held dear to me....I lost everyone that came into my life...The XWA gave me a second chance at building a new family of peers....I told you of my troubles because my reputation was being attacked yet again by Tony Maverick....Undercutting everything I stand for because I prove a huge threat to him....Despite my antics as of late, I was just putting on a show....Like a cartoon played before the movies to keep the audience in their seats...The real show is about to begin....I lost my family at an early age due to death and assholes...I had nobody....Not even God’s grace could save my soul....He had taken so much away from me as it was that there was no point in even praying for good things to come my way...I had nowhere that I fit in....I searched high and low for a proper home...Even with Kurt Angle I felt overshadowed by him....I didn’t feel like a force to be reckoned with....I felt like a joke....Being an underscore to him did nothing but make it seem as though I had everything handed to me in my life...Like I didn’t deserve the same treatment as everyone else....Even in XPW I felt like I was held low because of it....XWA showed me what it meant to fit it....What it meant to be cared about....Despite Grant giving me the clothesline it was a nice gesture to take out my opponent for me after showing a somewhat neutral relationship with Tony...He is probably bragging how he finally hit the savage on me....Kinda easy to do that when he knocks me on top of Trixie and knows I’d be more concerned of her safety than my own....I’m supposed to be the asshole, not you Tony....You barely qualify as a face my friend....If I wasn’t such a bastard to those fans they would flock to me and leave you in its wake...Call me a fool, a jerk, a good-for-nothing wannabe....You claim that I am basically a one-hit wonder when.....Hate to break it to you, but I just wasn’t giving it my all in those tag matches...I could tell you weren’t either....But you clearly tried enough to win....Last week with me and Seeker...You saw my effort....That wasn’t even my D-Game there Tony.....If you can beat my F-Game....good for you....You can beat Kevin...Congratulations on being a winner in that respect....You still have yet to claim a pin-fall over me my friend....Don’t think I’m done talking yet my friend...We will meet again sometime soon....
